Arthur Jeffress in the 1920s

Arthur Jeffress(1905-1961) was an art collector. He lived just outside Winchester in the mid 1930s with John Deakin, later Francis Bacon's favourite photographer [1].

Jeffress opened a gallery in London and bought a house in Venice. On his suicide in 1961 he bequeathed his collection to Southampton City Art Gallery and the Tate Gallery. A biography of Jeffress by Gill Hedley was published by Bloomsbury in spring 2020 [2]. From 3 April 2020 to 5 September 2020 "A complete portrait of Arthur Jeffress" was to be on show at the Southampton City Art Gallery but this was cancelled because of Covid- 19 restrictions. The exhibition was rearranged to run from 24 September 2021 to 22 January 2022.[3].
