(Redirected from Tyneside)
Tyne and Wear is a metropolitan county in north-east England. It was created, like other metropolitan counties, in 1974, and originally had an elected metropolitan authority, the Tyne and Wear County Council. The County Council, like other metropolitan authorities and the Greater London Council, was abolished in 1986, and the indvidual boroughs effectively became unitary authority areas.
Prior to 1974, the area was divided between Northumberland and County Durham, with the River Tyne forming the boundary.
Tyne and Wear contains five boroughs:
- South Tyneside
- North Tyneside
- City of Newcastle upon Tyne
- Gateshead
- City of Sunderland
Tyne and Wear is part of the Northumbria Police area.
LGBT History
There was a very active Tyneside CHE Group; in 1978 the group produced a tape/slide kit about homosexuality, for use in schools.
