The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1582. Many of its buildings are located in the historic Old Town of Edinburgh. It played an important role in Edinburgh's role as a chief intellectual centre during the Age of Enlightenment, and helped give the city the nickname of the "Athens of the North".
Simon Fanshawe was appointed Rector in 2024.
