Sir Richard Burton invented the concept of a "Sotadic Zone" of the world, including the Mediterranean region, parts of Asia, and all of North and South America, in which homosexual relations were supposed to be particularly prevalent.
Burton first advanced his Sotadic Zone concept in the "Terminal Essay" in Volume 10 of his translation of The Arabian Nights — which he called The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night — in 1886.
