University coat of arms
Creating Newcastle University owes its origins to a medical college founded in 1834, and the College of Physical Science (later renamed Armstrong College), founded in 1871. The two colleges later became part of the federal University of Durham and merged in 1937 to become King's College. It became an independent university in 1963. The University occupies a campus in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne.
