The first LGBT Conservative group was called CGHE (Conservative Group for Homosexual Equality). It was founded in 1975 by Professor Peter Campbell of Reading University. Its chairman from 1980 was the former minister Ian Harvey. It was reconstituted at the Conservative Party Conference in 1991 and was renamed TORCHE (the Tory Campaign for Homosexual Equality) under the chairmanship of David Starkey. The official launch of TORCHE took place at Club 29 in Mayfair, London in February 1992. This group was active until about 2003. Some some years later LGBTory was formed.
