Charles Laughton (born July 1899 – died December 1962) was an English stage and film actor. Laughton was born in Scarborough. He attended a Jesuit College and then served in the First World War, being gassed. Laughton became a drama student at RADA in 1925. He appeared on stage and screen and was also a director. In 1955, Laughton directed The Night of the Hunter, starring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters and Lillian Gish. The film has been cited among critics as one of the best of the 1950s. Laughton's bisexuality was corroborated by several of his contemporaries and is generally accepted by Hollywood historians.
