Brighton Lesbian and Gay Sports Society
From LGBT Archive
Brighton Lesbian and Gay Sports Society ('BLAGSS) was set up in 1997 to provide an inclusive and supportive sports and social group for the city's gay and lesbian community. Membership is open to all, but the vast majority of the our members are either gay or lesbian, and join to play sports and socialise with like-minded people.
With over 600 members, and growing each year, BLAGSS is the area's largest not-for-profit organisation of its kind. It organises year-round sports and social activities, operating as an umbrella group for various specific sport sub-groups that co-ordinate their own activities. Occasional social events are set up across the entire membership.
Sports currently supported include:
- Badminton
- Cycling
- Golf
- Petanque-Boules
- Rock climbing
- Running
- Skiing
- Softball (Brighton Blaggards)
- Squash
- Tennis
- Tenpin Bowling
- Walking
In June 2011, BLAGSS won the "Favourite Community Social/Leisure Networking Organisation" category at the Golden Handbag Awards 2010/11.
