Arthur Jeffress

Arthur Jeffress (1905-1961) was an art collector. He lived just outside Winchester in the mid 1930s with John Deakin, later Francis Bacon's favourite photographer. Jeffress opened a gallery in London and bought a house in Venice. On his suicide in 1961 he bequeathed his collection to Southampton City Art Gallery and the Tate Gallery.

A biography of Jeffress by Gill Hedley will be published by Bloomsbury in spring 2020 [1]. From 3 April 2020 to 5 September 2020 'A complete portrait of Arthur Jeffress' will be on show at the Southampton City art Gallery.
