The London Borough of Newham was formed in 1965 by merging the county boroughs of East Ham and West Ham, both geographically part of Essex. Neither East Ham nor West Ham were part of the old London County Council and ILEA area, so Newham is officially considered an outer London borough, although in many respects it has more in common with inner London.
The district of Stratford, and most of the 2012 Olympic Park, is located within Newham.
