The Scottish National Party (SNP) is a political party campaigning for independence for Scotland.
It was founded in 1934 and has been represented at the Westminster Parliament since 1967. After devolution in 1999, the SNP became the second largest party in the Scottish Parliament. It became the largest party in the 2007 elections, and won an overall majority in 2011. Its leader, Alex Salmond, is First Minister of Scotland.
