Derek Oyston (1930–2005) was a schoolteacher living in Gateshead. He experienced abuse from his pupils when they discovered he was gay, and gave up teaching. On his death he left a considerable legacy to CHE, which enabled the organisation to present the Derek Oyston Film Award and the Derek Oyston Achievement Award in his honour.
