Ellis Powell was an actress, who played Mrs Dale in the BBC radio series Mrs Dale's Diary from 1948 to 1963. In 1963 she was dropped from the role. She reacted with bitterness, and the situation may have inspired the plot of the play and film The Killing of Sister George. The tone of the Wikipedia article suggests that she might herself have been lesbian, but there seems to be no direct evidence for this. She did however try, unsuccessfully, to sue Frank Marcus, author of The Killing of Sister George, claiming that "Sister George" was based on her.
