The West Riding is one of the historic divisions of the county of Yorkshire, along with the North Riding and East Riding.At the reorganisation of local government in 1974 the West Riding was abolished. The major part of the area was formed into two new metropolitan counties, West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire, and smaller parts were absorbed into Lancashire, Cumbria, North Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, and the reconstituted East Riding of Yorkshire.
