Furness is the red shaded area in the top left of this map of the historic county of Lancashire.
Furness is an area in the south of Cumbria. Historically it was part of Lancashire, but separated from the rest of the county by Morecambe Bay, but was incorporated into Cumbria when that county was formed in 1974. The town of Barrow-in-Furness is now a separate local government district; the rest of Furness forms part of South Lakeland.
