Bedford is a borough and unitary authority within the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire. As well as the town of Beford proper, the Borough includes Kempton and a surrounding rural area. The district was created in 1974 and initially called North Bedfordshire. It became a unitary authority in 2009.

There was a Bedford CHE group in the 1970s.
The Barley Mow, in St Loyes Street, claims to be "the oldest gay venue in the UK".[1]
Bedford Womens Group was "an informal, friendly email list for bi and lesbian women in the Bedford area".
The Bedford LGBT Forum met at the Day Resource Centre in Bedford.
Bedford Borough Council initiated an LGBT Stakeholders Group in September 2012.
TransBedford provides information and support for local trans people.
