Bedford is a borough and unitary authority within the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire. As well as the town of Beford proper, the Borough includes Kempton and a surrounding rural area. The district was created in 1974 and initially called North Bedfordshire. It became a unitary authority in 2009.

LGBT history

There was a Bedford CHE group in the 1970s.

The Barley Mow, in St Loyes Street, claims to be "the oldest gay venue in the UK".[1]

Bedford Womens Group is "an informal, friendly email list for bi and lesbian women in the Bedford area".[2]

The Bedford LGBT Forum takes place every three months at the Day Resource Centre in Bedford.[3]

Bedford Borough Council initiated an LGBT Stakeholders Group in September 2012.[4]

TransBedford provides information and support for local trans people.
