He was Labour MP for Islington South and Finsbury from 1983 to 2005, and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport from 1997 to 2001. He was created a life peer on standing down from parliament in 2005, and now sits as a cross-bencher. In 2008 he became Chair of the Environment Agency.

In 1984 Chris Smith became the first MP to come out as gay. In 2005 he revealed that he is HIV positive.
