It was historically a stop for stage coaches on the route between [[Holyhead]] (the main port for Ireland) and London. It is noted for the International Eisteddfod, a music festival held every July since 1947.

==LGBT history==
The [[Ladies of Llangollen]] made their home there together in 1780, having eloped from their families in Ireland. Their house, Plas Newydd, on the outskirts of the town, is now open to the public.
