National Festival of LGBT History
The National Festival of LGBT History is an annual event held in Manchester during LGBT History Month (February), combining a public festival and an academic conference. It is organised by Schools OUT UK.
History
The academic strand of the festival began as a standalone conference series under the title "What Is and How to Do LGBT History?", the first edition of which was held in 2014. The second edition was incorporated into the first National Festival of LGBT History in February 2015, held across several Manchester venues including Manchester Central Library and The People's History Museum. The 2015 festival brought together academics from institutions including Durham University, the University of Bergen, and Indiana University, alongside activists and artists. Patrons and speakers included Stuart Milk, Professor Jeffrey Weeks, and Peter Tatchell.[1]
The 2016 conference, the third in the series, was also held in Manchester in February. Ross Burgess presented a paper at the conference on lgbthistoryuk.org as a model for community-led online LGBT history archives.
