James Barry (1795–1865) was an army surgeon and Inspector General of Hospitals.

He is said to have been born a girl, named Margaret Ann Bulkley, and raised asa boy.[1] Other sources state that he was raised as a boy, sent to medical school as a man, and lived as a male throughout his life, but at his death he was found to have been a woman. It has beenargued that hewas a genetic male with [[Klinefelter's syndrome.<ref>
