A suggested principle: this is a timeline of firsts and turning points, not a catalogue. An entry earns its place by changing something — the first of its kind, a landmark audience, a broadcasting row, a change in what was permitted. A programme that simply contains an LGBT character does not qualify unless it was the first, or the row about it mattered.

State the boundaries plainly: British production, broadcast television and its streaming successors, drama, documentary and factual alike.
