Northumberland is the most northerly county in England. It is a unitary authority - that is there is a county council but no district councils. Towns include Hexham, Morpeth, and Berwick-upon-Tweed. Prior to 1972 it also included {Newcastle upon Tyne]] and other major centres which are now in Tyne and Wear.

Northumbria Police covers the counties of Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.
