Staffordshire is a county in the English midlands. The county council area includes eight districts, plus a unitary authority, Stoke-on-Trent. In 1972 much of the southern part of the historic county was lost with the formation of the West Midlands metropolitan county.
The area round Stoke-on-Trent, known as "the Potteries" was an important centre of ceramic manufacture.
