Lesbian is currently the most usual and acceptable term for homosexual women. It derives from the Greek island of Lesbos (Greek Λέσβος – pronounced Lesvos in Modern Greek), the home of the woman poet Sappho (Σαπφώ; c.620–570 BC) some of whose poems talk of love for other women.
