West Ham is an area within the London Borough of Newham. From 1889 onwards it was a county borough, geographically within Essex but independent of the Essex County Council. In 1965 it merged with East Ham to form the new London Borough. It gives its name to West Ham United Football Club, currently playing in the Premier League.
