Alkarim Jivani (born 1957) is a British journalist, editor and author. He is best known as the author of It's Not Unusual: A History of Lesbian and Gay Britain in the Twentieth Century (1997) and as the writer associated with the BBC2 documentary series of the same name.
Background
Jivani was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and educated across Tanzania, Kenya and the United Kingdom. He holds a degree in Philosophy and Literature from the University of Sussex.[1]
Career
Jivani worked as an editor at Time Out magazine in London[1] and has written on film for Sight & Sound, the BFI's film magazine.

In 1997 Jivani published It's Not Unusual: A History of Lesbian and Gay Britain in the Twentieth Century (Michael O'Mara Books, in arrangement with the BBC; ISBN 1854792059), a 224-page illustrated oral history drawing on firsthand testimonies to trace LGBT life in Britain from the 1900s through to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s.[2][1] The book accompanied the BBC2 documentary series It's Not Unusual: A Lesbian and Gay History (1997), a three-part series examining changing attitudes towards homosexuality across the twentieth century.[3]
