The Colony Room was a private members club which opened in Soho in 1948. Owner Muriel Belcher catered for many gay customers but also encouraged heterosexuals to attend so as to lessen the chances of police attention to the club [1]. Members included Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and John Deakin (Vogue photographer).[2].
