LGBT History Project:Editors Club

The LGBT History Project Editors Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month, 19:00–20:00 (UK time), online via Google Meet. All registered editors and prospective editors are welcome. → Add to Google Calendar

The LGBT History Project Editors Club is a monthly one-hour online meeting for editors and prospective editors of lgbthistoryuk.org. It is an informal, friendly space to discuss editorial standards, share ideas for new content, hear from guest contributors and institutions, and shape the long-term direction of the project.

The Editors Club is not a formal committee – it is a collaborative working space. Final editorial decisions rest with the administrator(s), but the Editors Club is where those decisions are informed, refined and discussed.

About the Editors Club

The meeting was established in September 2026 to bring together the editing community on a regular basis. It runs for one hour and is open to:

• All registered editors of lgbthistoryuk.org
• Prospective editors who are considering applying for an account
• Invited guests from partner institutions and the LGBT+ community

Each meeting has a main topic – working through a planned programme of editorial themes – followed by an open floor where any editor can raise questions, ideas or issues.

A brief summary of each meeting is circulated by email within 48 hours, and archived in the Past meeting summaries section below.

Dates follow the third Wednesday of each month. The programme is reviewed at the end of each six-month block and updated with editor input.

Meeting format

Each meeting follows this running order:

What we discuss

The main topic slot works through a planned programme, with recurring themes revisited as the project develops. Topics include:

Editorial standards

• The Editorial Policy – principles, grey areas, practical questions
• The Image Policy – rights, sourcing, and what is acceptable
• Neutral point of view; coverage of contested topics
• Edit summaries, article structure, and house style

Content development

• New article topics – proposals, scope questions, priorities
• Personal stories and oral history – format and templates
• Themed timelines (following the Sport Timeline)
• Geographic gaps – parts of the UK currently underrepresented

Community and outreach

• Recruiting new editors from different backgrounds and regions
• The walking tour app working party updates
• Collaborations with partner institutions (see below)
• Schools and university outreach
• The LGBT History Speakers Programme
• Social media content ideas and the editorial calendar

Help for new editors

If you are new to wiki editing, the Editors Club has a standing new editor corner in the final few minutes of each open floor – a friendly chance to ask questions about how to edit, what to write, or how the wiki works.

For a fuller introduction to editing, we run occasional New Editors Induction sessions on a separate evening. These cover:

Partner institutions

The Editors Club maintains working relationships with a number of institutions whose collections are relevant to LGBT history in the UK. Representatives from these organisations are invited to speak at meetings and to collaborate on content.

Become an editor

The LGBT History Project is always looking for new editors, particularly people with knowledge of:

• Specific geographic areas – especially outside London, and in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
• Specialist subjects – arts and culture, politics, medicine, sport, legal history
• Communities currently underrepresented in the wiki's coverage

You do not need to be an expert or an experienced writer. If you care about LGBT history and want to contribute, you are welcome.
