Glastonbury is a small town in the Mendip district of Somerset. It is associated with legends such as that the young Jesus was brought here by Joseph of Arimathea, who is said later to have founded the first church here and planted the famous Glastonbury Thorn. In the 12th century the monks at Glastonbury Abbey discovered the supposed graves of King Arthur and his wife, which were viewed by Gerald of Wales. In modern times Glastonbury has been noted for the popmusic festival, held annually since the 1970s.
