Bute is an island in the Firth of Clyde. Its main town is Rothesay. The former county of Bute also included several other islands. In 1975 the county became part of the Strathclyde region. In 1996 the island of Bute became part of the Argyll and Bute council area, the other islands becoming part of North Ayrshire.
