	The building was erected in the 1920s as a cinema, on the site of a former warehouse. In 1968 the intereior was redesigned in a plainer, modern style, and in 1977 it was converted to a theatre. It closed in 1984 and re-opened in 1985 as a nightclub and music venue, together with the building next door, known as Astoria 2.
