New page

The UK LGBT History Project aims to be accurate, fair and properly sourced. We are a volunteer-run archive, and we do sometimes get things wrong. This page explains how to tell us, and what we will do about it.

We would always rather hear from you than not. Raising a concern with us is not a complaint about the project – it is how the archive gets better.

Correcting a factual error
For straightforward corrections – a wrong date, a misspelled name, a broken link, a misattributed photograph – the quickest routes are:

* Edit the page yourself, if you have an account, giving a source in the edit summary; or
* Email us at jonathan@lgbthistoryuk.org with the page name and the correction.

If you can point us to a source, please do. If you know something to be wrong but cannot immediately prove it, tell us anyway and we will look into it.

Content about yourself
If a page mentions you and you believe it is inaccurate, unfair, out of date or intrusive, please contact us at jonathan@lgbthistoryuk.org. You do not need to make a formal legal complaint, and you do not need a solicitor. Tell us what is wrong and we will review it.

We take particular care over articles about living people (see LGBT History Project:Editorial Policy §2.4). Where a claim about a living person is contested, our normal practice is to amend or temporarily remove the disputed passage while we check it, rather than leave it in place during the review.

Formal notice of complaint
If you wish to make a formal complaint about material you believe to be defamatory, please send it to jonathan@lgbthistoryuk.org, marked Notice of complaint.

So that we can act on it properly, please include:

* your name;
* the exact words or passage complained of, and the page and section where they appear (a link is ideal);
* why you say the material is defamatory of you – what it means, and why that meaning is false or unsupported;
* any facts or sources that would help us assess it;
* your contact details; and
* whether you consent to your name and contact details being provided to the person who posted the material.

If you do not wish your details to be passed on, please say so, and we will treat the notice accordingly.

What happens next
* We will acknowledge a notice of complaint within 48 hours of receiving it.
* We will give a substantive response within seven days wherever possible, and will tell you if a matter is going to take longer.
* Where material is contested and the issue is not immediately resolvable, we will normally amend or take down the disputed passage while we review it.
* We keep a dated record of complaints received and of the action taken on each.

Taking material down while we check it does not mean we accept that it was wrong, and leaving it up does not mean we have dismissed the complaint. It means we are looking at it.

Copyright, images and personal data
* For copyright and licensing questions, see LGBT History Project:Copyrights.
* For photographs, including requests to remove an image of yourself, see LGBT History Project:Photographs.
* For questions about personal data, see LGBT History Project:Privacy policy.

Notices about copyright or images can be sent to the same address.

What we cannot do
We cannot remove accurate, properly sourced and fairly presented material simply because its subject would prefer it were not published. Where an article records something that is on the public record, our response to a complaint will usually be to check that it is accurate, attributed, proportionate and up to date – including any response, outcome or denial – rather than to delete it.

Where we have got something wrong, we will correct it, and we will say so.

Contact
Email: jonathan@lgbthistoryuk.org

Please put Correction, Notice of complaint or Image request in the subject line, as appropriate.
