New page

Dursley McLinden (29 May 1965 – 7 August 1995) was a British actor best known for his work in West End musical theatre, including a long run with the original London company of The Phantom of the Opera. Diagnosed HIV-positive in 1990, he became one of the founding spirits of West End Cares — the theatre industry's HIV/AIDS fundraising organisation — continuing to perform and organise benefit events until weeks before his death at the age of 30. His life directly inspired the lead character in Russell T Davies's 2021 Channel 4 drama It's a Sin.

Early life and training
Dursley James McLinden was born on 29 May 1965 in Douglas, Isle of Man. He made his stage debut at the age of eight, performing in a school production. At sixteen he moved to London to train at Mountview Theatre School in Crouch End, where he was among the youngest students ever admitted. It was there that he met Jill Nalder, who would become his closest friend and flatmate.

Stage career
After Mountview, McLinden worked in touring productions of The Threepenny Opera and Macbeth, and in repertory theatre across England — including productions of To Kill a Mockingbird and Damn Yankees in Birmingham. His West End debut came in 1985 in a revival of Gigi at the Lyric Theatre.

His breakthrough role came in 1988 when he was cast as Young Ben in Stephen Sondheim's Follies at the Shaftesbury Theatre, performing opposite Daniel Massey and Eartha Kitt. In the same year he appeared in the film Just Ask for Diamond and on television as Sergeant Mike Smith in the Doctor Who story "Remembrance of the Daleks."

From 1992 McLinden was a member of the company of The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre, performing ensemble roles and understudying the role of Raoul. His final performance as Raoul was given on the night before his thirtieth birthday, 28 May 1995, after which he was hospitalised.

The Pink Palace
McLinden and Jill Nalder shared a flat together — known to their circle as "the Pink Palace" — which became a social hub for their group of friends in the West End theatre world. The flat and the friendships formed around it became the central setting of It's a Sin.

West End Cares
McLinden received an HIV-positive diagnosis in 1990. Rather than withdrawing from public life, he became one of the driving forces behind West End Cares, the theatrical HIV/AIDS fundraising initiative founded that year under the umbrella of Crusaid. With Jill Nalder and performer Jae Alexander, he organised regular cabaret fundraising nights at Smith's restaurant in Covent Garden, drawing on the talent of the West End community to raise money for palliative care, funerals and support for those living with HIV. He continued this work until weeks before his death.

Death and legacy
Dursley McLinden died on 7 August 1995, aged 30. He had been working up until ten weeks before his death.

Russell T Davies had met McLinden through Jill Nalder and, in writing It's a Sin, drew directly on his life, spirit and death to create the character of Ritchie Tozer — the drama's lead, played by Olly Alexander (of the band Years & Years). The fictional Ritchie shares McLinden's Isle of Man origins, his acting ambitions and his Doctor Who connection: the tribute woven into Episode 4 of It's a Sin references McLinden's actual role in "Remembrance of the Daleks."

A 2024 documentary, Looking for Dursley, was produced for the Doctor Who: The Collection Season 25 Blu-ray release, exploring his life and legacy.
