The Food Chain was established by friends of people living with HIV, inspired by American organisations. Set up in a time before effective medication was available, wasting was common, and good nutrition helped support the immune system and maintain a healthy body mass.<ref>http://www.foodchain.org.uk/about-us/our-history/</ref>

On Christmas Day 1988, members of the central London [[Metropolitan Community Church]] delivered meals to people with HIV. The following year the service was developed more formally and took the name "The Food Chain". It became a charity in 1991.
