'''Bette Bourne''' (born Peter Bourne, 22 September 1939 – 23 August 2024) was a British actor, drag performer and gay rights activist whose career spanned six decades. He is best known as the founder of [[Bloolips]], the radical gay drag theatre company he led from 1977 to the mid-1990s, and for his later celebrated portrayal of [[Quentin Crisp]] in Tim Fountain's biographical play ''Resident Alien''. He consistently resisted the label "drag queen", preferring to describe himself as "a gay man in a frock."

==Early life and career==

Peter Bourne was born on 22 September 1939 in Hackney, east London, to a working-class family; his mother was an amateur actress. He made his stage debut at the age of four, performing at Stoke Newington Town Hall. After training at the [[Central School of Speech and Drama]], he worked in television through the 1960s, appearing in ''Dixon of Dock Green'', ''The Avengers'' and ''The Prisoner'', billed as Peter Bourne. Between August 1969 and March 1970 he performed alongside [[Ian McKellen]] in the Prospect Theatre Company's touring productions of ''Edward II'' and ''Richard II''.

==Gay Liberation Front==

Disillusioned with mainstream show business, Bourne became involved with the [[Gay Liberation Front]] in the early 1970s and joined a gay commune in Notting Hill. He adopted women's clothing as a political act — a questioning of gender norms rather than impersonation. As he later explained, wearing a skirt "changed the agenda, the way that you thought and spoke." He took the name Bette during this period.

==Hot Peaches and Bloolips==

In 1976 Bourne joined the New York-based radical drag collective Hot Peaches on a European tour. Hot Peaches included activist '''Marsha P. Johnson''' and represented a fusion of drag, gay liberation politics and theatrical invention. When the group returned to New York, Bourne remained in London and in 1977 co-founded [[Bloolips]] with fellow performer Lavinia Co-op.

Bloolips combined political satire, tap dancing, close-harmony singing and extravagant handmade costume to create a body of work that was entirely unlike anything else in British theatre. The company produced 13 shows between 1978 and the mid-1990s and toured extensively in the UK and internationally — including sold-out seasons off-Broadway in New York, where ''Lust in Space'' won an OBIE Award in 1980. Bourne's role within the company was sometimes billed as "Bossy Bette". He ran the company as a financial cooperative, sharing all income equally among members. The AIDS crisis hit the company hard: founding member Diva Dan died of AIDS in 1988.

==Post-Bloolips theatre career==

After Bloolips disbanded in the mid-1990s, Bourne developed a wide-ranging stage career:

==A Life in Three Acts==

In 2009 Bourne and playwright Mark Ravenhill created ''A Life in Three Acts'', a staged exploration of Bourne's life drawn from extended conversations between the two. It premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, and toured to The Hague, the Soho Theatre in London and St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn in 2010. Ravenhill directed a documentary of the same spirit, ''It Goes with the Shoes'', in 2014. Guardian critic Leslie Felperin described it as "practically a microcosm of 20th-century gay culture."
