Stuart Andrew grew up on a council estate in Anglesey, going to school in Menai Bridge. A Conservative supporter from an early age, he switched to Labour for a time. He met his partner Robin while working for a hospice in Lancashire and they decided to move to Leeds together.
He was a Leeds city councillor from 2003 to 2010.
During a debate in Parliament he recalled having been attacked in the street and beaten unconscious “because of who and what I am”.
