European Commission of Human Rights on the basis that the age of consent for gay sex being set at 18 violated his right, as a man under 18, to respect for private life. The case of Sutherland v United Kingdom was considered by the Commission, who decided that the law constituted discrimination. The age of consent was subsequently reduced to 16 by the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 2000.
